Rob Jones Grief Solo Gallery Show Exclusive Preview

No comments:

Earlier this month I told you about Rob Jones' first ever solo show at Galerie F in Chicago happening Thursday July 17 from 6pm-10pm and now I got some more previews.

Galerie F celebrates its second anniversary with “Grief”, Rob Jones’ first solo exhibition in Chicago. Jones presents a collection one hundred original drawings and screenprints during this four week installation. Join Galerie F as they embark on third third year with Logan Square in their ever-expanding store located at the intersection of Fullerton Ave and Milwaukee Ave. The evening's affairs will be sponsored by local brewpub Revolution Brewing and New York based brewery Brooklyn Beer. Galerie F also welcomes The American Poster Institute and encourages all attending to visit Flatstock at Pitchfork Music Festival the following weekend.

Original works accompanied by limited edition silk screen prints will be available at the opening reception. All remaining works will be posted in Galerie F's online store the following Monday. Opening reception is free and open to the public. Rob Jones will be in attendance and this might be your only chance to meet a Grammy Winner in person, plus he is the man that started the Mondotees Movie poster craze. No the Grammy wont be at the show, I asked.

I asked Rob what the theme of his show is :
I’ve designated these as self portraits since they spring from how I view myself (past and present) through a character I’ve identified with throughout my life. Sometimes other elements are brought in that feel complimentary to Charlie Brown to better visualize the sentiment I’m attempting to express. Some are just illustrations of moments in my life (usually poor decisions) that continue to haunt me or at least induce me to groan to myself, “Oy, that could have gone better.” One lesson made more concrete by this exercise is that I tend to grip the past too tightly. The bad things are like a burner on hot stove. If you keep pressing your hand against it, then of course it’s going to blister. Better to just observe the orange spiral from a distance and fight the temptation to touch it.

That sounds super blue, I know and I should say there are some positives in the show too. However, if you know me, then you will expect more exorcising than ebullience.

All the original drawings are ink and prismacolor marker (Canary Yellow) on French 80lb Speckletone Sand cover stock. The prints for the show will be kept a secret until the night of the show. Originals are 8.5 X 11.  There will be one 18X24 original, but the rest will stick to the aforementioned standard.

If you are going, RSVP to the show on the Facebook Event Page HERE

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Seattle Poster by Jon Smith

No comments:

Nothing like a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds tour to bring out some incredible posters and Jon Smith has created a smoking hot one for the show in Seattle this Wednesday. Jon put it on sale early and you get five dollars off normal price to get a jump on everyone being busy/out of town for the 4th of July at the end of the week..in America anyway so jump on it!!

The poster is a four color screen print for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and special guest Mark Lanegan at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle. 18"x24" signed and numbered edition of 100.

Here is what Jon said about the poster:
I love me some Nick Cave as I’m a sucker for cinematic lyrics. There were a lot of lyrics to work from on the latest album Push The Sky Away, I keyed in on the lyrics from two songs in particular for this poster: We No Who U R and Higgs Boson Blues.

Lyrics from the opening track We No Who UR:
“The trees will stand like pleading hands…The trees will burn blackened hands”

and from Higgs Boson Blues on the second half of the album:
“..Flame trees line the streets…But I’m driving my car down to Geneva”
On sale right now and get $5 for the next 48 hours in Jon Smith's Store

Mike Giant Modern Hieroglyphics Print & Original Artwork

No comments:

On Monday 1xRUN brings in another legend of the art world for his first ever release with them, Mike Giant. He will be releasing a print titled Modern Hieroglyphics along with 10 pieces of original ink art as well.

"These designs fit within my “Modern Hieroglyphics” series. Last year I was studying a lot of Egyptian hieroglyphs, trying to decipher their meaning based simply on what they looked like. Then I started to look at classic American tattoo designs and corporate logos in the same way. I tried to observe them as static objects, without their current meaning. When I imagine 500 years in the future, I believe the people at that time will look at our logos and tattoo designs in much the same way that I look at Egyptian iconography. So, in a way, this series is my gift to the future." - Mike Giant

The print and all the original ink art goes on sale Monday at NOON EDT at 1xRUN.com

Anonymous Ink & Idea Swans Austin Poster

No comments:

Anonymous Ink & Idea have a striking new poster for the recent Swans show in Austin Texas on sale.

Details soak them in and enjoy it

Swans - June 27 - Austin, TX
4 ink colors, measuring 18x24″ screen print Printed on 100lb French Pop-Tone (Red Hot) Numbered Edition of 100 Signed by Anonymous

I asked AI&I about the design:

While creating gig posters I often listen to a band's discography in search of inspiration. Swans new album (which I probably listened to 20-30 times) provided me with more than a handful of ideas to pursue. But the strongest vision came to me while listening to the 34 minute track "Bring the Sun" / "Toussaint L'Ouverture" which begins with a loud, powerful, repetitive progression sounding like the announcement of the end of the world. Three minutes in, things change dramatically and I imagine a mother quietly calming her child by raising a finger to her lips and giving a gentle 'shhhhh'. As the song builds back up to its former intensity, I imagine the world in my micro narrative is still ending, but now the fear and anxiety that was so prevalent at the start has been replaced with acceptance and peace. There are some vague spiritual and lyrical references, as well...but I'd rather leave that to interpretation. I will say, the circular image in the background, is an abstract reference to an exploding sun, which was the primary motivation for my color palette. The exploding sun and the calming mother are in conflict with each other, but I tried to present everything at once in the most minimal way I knew how.

Ernesto Yerena Prayer of the Ancestors & Decolonize Maiz Prints

No comments:

Ernesto Yerena has a new website and a couple of new prints he just released titled Prayer of the Ancestors & Decolonize Maiz.

Prayer of the Ancestors is a tribute to the original traditions of Mexico before colonization basically forced the people there to reject the culture and languages of the ancestors.

Decolonize Maiz is an image Erneseto created in order to honor Maiz or corn. As a people who are native to the continent where Maiz originates they identify as the people of the Maiz. In many indigenous nations Maiz or corn is a key element in the identity of the people. So if Maiz is gone so is the culture and heart of the people.

The prints can by purchased in Ernesto's Store

Pearl Jam Berlin Poster By TAZ Jim Evans

No comments:

It's been about 8 years since TAZ also known as Jim Evans made a rock poster. But Pearl Jam brought him back for the poster for the show in Berlin Germany tonight. During the 90's TAZ created some of the greatest posters ever made. Bright colors incredible images and under a black light they looked amazing with the florescent inks used.

Found out some more info about this poster, it was printed like his old ones with florescent inks so this bad boy is going to glow like crazy under a black light. If you bought one check it out with a black light, your mind will be blown.

Tim Doyle Sea Also Rise Prints On Sale

No comments:

For the first time on Nakatomi , they have 2 BIG 24×36 prints in artist Tim Doyle’s ongoing ‘The Sea Also Rises’ series of prints, available HERE NOW.

Pictured above is ‘The Sea Also Rises: The Exodus of Turtleton’ which is signed and numbered in an edition of 200 worldwide.

And this print, the newest in the series is called ‘The Sea Also Rises: The Fleet Deploys’, which also measures 24×36 and is signed and numbered in a first edition of 150. Features eye-popping florescent ink throughout the print!

I asked Doyle to share his thoughts on these prints-

“The Sea Also Rises series is by far the favorite thing I get to work on. It’s been rolling off and on for 5 years now, almost as long as I’ve had Nakatomi. The whole series comes from a place of deep concern for how humans interact with their environment, and the long-range consequences of our actions today. And for whatever reason, the way my brain works means that concern comes out as Sea Monsters will rising up to take us out, to prevent further damage. These two prints were originally commissioned by PangeaSeed for their ‘Sea of Change’ series, which helps to raise awareness about several issues pertaining to the oceans, most notably the practice of shark finning.

Exodus of Turtleton depicts a city- turtle, leaving it’s post off the coast of Japan, carrying an Earth-Spirit serenely away to safety. It’s definitely one of the more up-lifting images in the series, as nothing is blowing up or being attacked! I thought a lot about my children while creating this one, and how I could use a large turtle to carry them to safety one day. Or just carry them for a few hours, so I can catch a nap.

The Fleet Deploys shows a water-witch witnessing the Hammerhead God and his children moving from the depths to unknown points on the globe. I’m not sure where they’re going, but it can’t be good news. I was a little concerned about putting the sunken ship in there, as it’s the only man-made thing in an otherwise pristine scene, but having a recognizable object gave the rest of the scene some scale. Instead of it looking like a normal sized shark and a bunch of small ones, you REALLY can feel the size of the beast.”

Artist statement:

The jellyfish is my favorite deep sea creature because it is enigmatic and utterly magnificent. The bioluminescence and seemingly alien form compelled me to interpret an illustration that captured its eerie beauty. Its home environment feels akin to the deep reaches of space, which inspired me to create a composition as if it were an alien in a science fiction poster.

JeanPaul Mallozzi Lie With Me Print Release

No comments:

JeanPaul Mallozzi is releasing a new print today with 1xRUN titled Lie With Me.

"I created this piece back in 2012. The title has a double meaning. the first taking the title literally. The other side, I made this painting during a time when I was head deep in a rough relationship. I found myself “going through the motions” knowing things were at an end, just waiting for one of us to make the move to end it officially. I wanted the guys gestural face to mimic a sad smile looking down on her, but the woman looking at you (the viewer) as the object of affection. You become the greener pasture. It's about having the courage to break away from something you know isn't healthy for you any longer.

It was made for my solo exhibition at 101/Exhibit in Miami. It was part of a massive undertaking, because the gallery was 5000 sq ft, and I had to occupy most of the space." - JeanPaul Mallozzi
