Mark Brabant Clothcraft Art Print, remembering Cleveland's past

No comments:
If you've ever driven I-90 west of Cleveland, chances are you've seen this structure just south of the highway. The Joseph & Feiss Clothcraft Warehouse was built in 1921 as part of the country's largest clothing factory. The 80,000 sq. ft., four-story structure was part of a sprawling 7 acre complex that employed 2,500 people in it's heyday. The warehouse's first floor housed the design & examining departments as well as sponging rooms. The 2nd floor was used for cutting fabric from pre-made patterns and the top two floors were mainly for storage and packing of finished garments. Atop the building sits a 60,000 gallon water tank that was connected to the plant's sprinkler system.

After World War II, the company's 'Clothcraft' label was replaced by various specialty brands. In 1989, Joseph & Feiss was puchased by Hugo Boss of Germany. A few years later, Hugo Boss was restructured and looked to shed the Joseph & Feiss brands. In 1996, the J&F trademark was purchased by The Men's Wearhouse with the property not part of the deal. Americon-Homes of Beachwood, OH purchased the site in 1997 for redevelopment. Financial troubles soon befell the new owners and redevelopment was haulted leaving the warehouse vacant and unattended. The building became shelter for the neighborhood homeless and a massive canvas for graffiti artists. In 2008, the uppermost part of the north facade was roller tagged by the artist known as Reader with his trademark phrase READ MORE BOOKS. He 'signed' his handiwork at the top of the west facade.

In 2010, the property officially known as The Joseph & Feiss Company Clothcraft Shops was placed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. In July, 2011, the Ohio Dept. of Development awarded the current owners of the property a $1 million historic preservation tax credit to rehabilitate the vacant warehouse and turn it into a 62-unit apartment building. The project has yet to begin.

CLOTHCRAFT 18" x 18" screen print • Edition of 55 • 5 colors on white 100 lb. cover weight stock. $40.00US

It's a nice looking print, but looks to much like the work of Dan MacAdam at Crosshair

Chi-Noceros Print by Phineas X. Jones

Dusk Variant
For quite a long time the only thing rarer around here than a wild rhinoceros has been a for-sale Chi-Noceros. But finally a new batch has been produced and released to graze upon the urban veldt of Chicago.

There are, in fact, two variants of the Chi-Noceros available. The main version, printed on Speckletone Kraft paper, and the "Dusk" version, printed on Steel Blue paper. Both versions are rather small editions and will not likely be around long. (As of this writing, only 13 of the Dusk variant are still available.) If you've been waiting for a Chi-Noceros, act now.

Chi-Noceros, Second Edition

Tes One Stand Our Ground Trayvon Martin Benefit Poster On Sale Details

No comments:

"Laws should be designed to protect the innocent, the unarmed, the child walking back home from the corner store. Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law (and similar laws in 31 states) does the opposite by giving license to any aggressor with a gun, and allowing them to claim self-defense as their reasoning to shoot and kill another person.

I created “Stand Our Ground” for people – regardless of race or gender, to stand in solidarity against the injustice this law allows. Adding awareness to the Trayvon Martin tragedy, and aiding his family in their pursuit of justice.

All proceeds from the release of “Stand Our Ground” will be donated to the Justice for Trayvon Charity and their advocacy efforts." - Tes

The poster is 18 x 24 inch 3-Color Silkscreen Print on 140lbs French Archival Paper

"The work that I create is the line of demarcation between traditional art techniques and digital graphic design. From graffiti art and illustration, to vector graphics and raster images, the fusion of these contrasting elements are a direct representation of my surroundings and how I see them." - Tes One

Tom Thewes / der Lärm BÄDguys Series on sale today at 1xRun

1 comment:

Years ago I was lucky enough to see some of Tom Thewe's originals in person including Bad Guys the painting this print is from. I have included those pictures above. Some artist speak of mixed media for creating their work. Tom really does use mixed media his paintings and art. In person they are amazing journeys of color and texture.

"der Lärm's first studio space was in a leaky basement on the corner of 3rd and Main in Royal Oak, Michigan. We shared a parking lot with the restaurant and apartments next door. In one of these apartments dwelt "Dr." Jack Kevorkian who also owned the building. At first we thought him a quirky old kook, just another of the interesting cast of characters in a creatively burgeoning Detroit suburb as yet undiscovered by mass culture. That first year, Dr. Death, as we affectionately dubbed him, rose to prominence in a solar storm of media hype. At that time my brother was studying medical ethics at Georgetown University and as we both held similarly late working hours we held many early morning phone conversations discussing the serious issues surrounding physician assisted suicide and contrasting them with the wildly flamboyant antics of Dr Death and his egomaniacal, ambitious lawyer Geoffrey Fieger. These discussions led to a series of pieces, finished and unfinished, that I premiered in my first gallery show at ©POP, an exhibition which began a business relationship that would define my life for the next decade and a half." - Tom Thewes

This RUN is signed, numbered and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Bad Guys comes in two formats 18 x 24 inch Giclée on 330gsm Archival Cotton Paper with an edition of 30. Or 18 x 24 inch Giclée on Metal with an edition of 10.

On sale at 1xRun.com at Noon EDT today

Tom Thewes fiercely believes in the fundamentally powerful relevance of the group of artists who used the visual vocabulary of popular culture (cartoons, rock posters, advertising, and graffiti) to communicate and express themselves in a way that broke through the worn ivory tower elitism of the then pervasive over-intellectualized art institutions. He then began to implement his grand vision for his Detroit gallery ©POP as the leading proponent of these brave underground art rebels by renovating a three story, former trophy shop, bar, Post Office, and den of iniquity in Detroit's Midtown Cultural Center into a world-class exhibition space and multi-discipline focal point for this pop-culture revolution. The newly improved cultural showcase opened to much fanfare and excited expectation with a "Grand Re-Opening" exhibition entitled, "© Stands For..." which included all of the ©POP regulars plus names like Mark Ryden, H.R. Giger, Robert Williams, Eric White, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Isabel Samaras, and many more.

First Mondo Book goes on sale today

No comments:

I have one of the Jay Ryan books that inspired this and it is pretty cool.

Details from Justin:

If you attended the gallery show a few weeks ago, you might’ve seen or even bought our new book. We are all very excited with how they came out. I briefly talk about this in the intro of the book, but I was at a friend’s house earlier this year and noticed a book he had by Jay Ryan. It was full of posters…. actual pieces of the screenprinted posters. I thought about the giant stack of returned posters we’ve gotten over the years and figured this would be a great way to get those out as we were moving to the new space and didn’t want to transport them. So, we began to go through the giant stack and pick out which ones we wanted in and in what order they should go. We found a local binder and had him cut them down to size and over several weeks we hand put these books together. It was an intricate process and below you can see some of the pics of the book getting put together.

I went to WonderCon in Anaheim, CA a few weeks ago and got some sketches done in the book and felt like sharing them. Lots of folks that got these at the gallery show got the artists in attendance to draw in theirs as well, so this works as a great sketchbook!

These books are limited to just 105 copies made TOTAL and are bound in 100% leather. They will be put up for sale on the site tomorrow and will cost $200.

On sale today at Mondotees.com in the MISC section at a random time.
